Pathways is honored to partner with UAB School of Public Health in our vision to establish emergency homeless childcare. Together we seek to raise funds to bring childcare to those who need it the most and can afford it the least, women and children experiencing homelessness in Birmingham.
Without affordable childcare as an option, homeless mothers take their children with them throughout the day. This can prevent women from having the opportunity to address the obstacles in the way of achieving economic stability and permanent housing. It becomes harder for a mother to pay attention in a skills-building class when she has a 3-year old child on her lap, and not having someone to watch her children may prevent her from being able to attend an interview or job. Children experiencing homelessness need a safe place to play, learn, be a child, and enjoy a respite from the realities of being homeless.
Pathways’ vision is to establish childcare that is immediately available to any homeless child at no cost. This will provide mothers a chance to pursue educational and employment opportunities - a chance to fulfill the goals that will move the family towards economic stability and housing. And they can do this with the ease of mind that their children are being well cared for.
